Dependency of Contact Angles on Three-Phase Contact Line: A Review

چکیده

The wetted area of a sessile droplet on practical substrate is limited by the three-phase contact line and characterized angle, radius drop height. Although, angles droplets have been studied for more than two hundred years, there are still some unanswered questions. In last decades, it was experimentally proven that advancing receding angles, angle hysteresis rough chemically heterogeneous surfaces, determined interactions liquid solid at alone, interfacial within perimeter irrelevant. However, confusion misunderstanding exist in this field regarding relationship between surface roughness chemical heterogeneity. An extensive review published debate dependence apparent or 2014. Following old review, several new articles were same subject. This article presents novel (mostly after 2014 to present) dependency line, short summary given long-lasting debate. Recently, improvements made; example, with properties obtained replacing solid–vapor tension term, ?SV, string term containing edge energy, ?SLV, curvature triple km, terms. addition, Gibbsian thermodynamics composite system developed resting multiphase also homogeneous equilibrium conditions, approach led conclusions above. Moreover, publications energy concept along “modified” Cassie equations examined review.

Effect of three-phase contact line topology on dynamic contact angles on heterogeneous surfaces.

Cassie-Baxter theory has traditionally been used to study liquid drops in contact with microstructured surfaces. The Cassie-Baxter theory arises from a minimization of the global Gibbs free energy of the system but does not account for the topology of the three-phase contact line. We experimentally compare two situations differing only in the microstructure of the roughness, which causes differ...

Three-phase contact line and line tension of electrolyte solutions in contact with charged substrates.

The three-phase contact line formed by the intersection of a liquid-vapor interface of an electrolyte solution with a charged planar substrate is studied in terms of classical density functional theory applied to a lattice model. The influence of the substrate charge density and of the ionic strength of the solution on the intrinsic structure of the three-phase contact line and on the correspon...

Shapes, contact angles, and line tensions of droplets on cylinders

Using an interface displacement model we calculate the shapes of nanometer-size liquid droplets on homogeneous cylindrical surfaces. We determine effective contact angles and line tensions, the latter defined as excess free energies per unit length associated with the two contact lines at the ends of the droplet. The dependences of these quantities on the cylinder radius and on the volume of th...

Direct determination of three-phase contact line properties on nearly molecular scale

Wetting phenomena in multi-phase systems govern the shape of the contact line which separates the different phases. For liquids in contact with solid surfaces wetting is typically described in terms of contact angle. While in macroscopic systems the contact angle can be determined experimentally, on the molecular scale contact angles are hardly accessible. Here we report the first direct experi...
